River looked at Wren over the top of her mother’s head. The words sounding false even to his ears. His cheek brushed warm, greying hair. Worried now that there had been something more than an expedition behind her mother’s barriers that brought them here. Foreboding as he remembered the web riddle she had spoken before.

He shifted a little, feeling the consciousness beneath the hair tickling his face recede. Slipping into sleep, body settling deep and limp against his own. He made her more comfortable, letting her head rolled into the pocket of his shoulder, where arm met body. Watching Wren’s fingers smooth the garden pricked hand. Free of her attention, he withdrew his own hand, tucking it back in his own personal space.

”No.” He looked at her, eyes crinkling in confusion. ”No.” Hurt and confused, but not angry. How could he be angry with Wren? Of all the people in all the realms, she was the last he could imagine stirring his temper. His real temper. ”Should we take her inside?” There were things he did not wish to discuss with her mother curled against him. Things he did not wish to feel.

Maybe a little time, a little activity and distance, would make it easier.

”I can carry her, if needed.” She didn’t look heavy, and he had craft to help him.

Wren remained unconvinced. Perhaps he wasn’t angry, which had been the question, sure. But something had happened. Made him pull so fully away. Teeth working against the inside of her lip she sighed. He didn’t look interested in elaborating; she wouldn’t risk upsetting him further with more questions. The set of her eyes softened, though. Guilt smoothing the corners and lowering her pale eyebrows.

She didn’t believe he could carry Barbra, either. Not with those skinny arms. Maybe there was more muscle under those tapered sleeves than it looked. Didn’t much matter. He had enough jewel power to lift the city off its foundations and carry it halfway to Lohr without staining his shirt.

”Probably... In another second.” Wren acknowledged. Not quite ready to let go. Much more at ease simply watching the woman sleep than suffering through tricky interactions. It was pure luck she hadn’t accidentally worked her up. Most of their visits had included tears of some sort.

Maybe it was River. He was good with her. It made Wren sorry she hadn’t warned him beforehand. Would he understand that they couldn’t interfere? There was no changing what was meant to happen? She supposed they would find out soon enough. Once they were at the inn, settled and fed. ”I guess its time to go. She’ll sleep a long while.”

Standing she moved around to his other side, hovering until he stood. Ready to lead the way down the wide corridors to the little room that looked right back out over the garden.

River pretended that he wasn't looking. Picking a a fluffy seed pod from Wren-mother's skirt. Rolling a pebble between the toe of his shoe and the ground. He was though, daring quick glances at Wren. Darting glimpses that saw her face soften. Questions unasked.

"Alright." So he waited until Wren was ready. Eyes drifting over the garden. The tight coil in his stomach eased by the limp weight against his body. Queen contact. It didn't matter that she was a broken creature, she trusted in him enough to sleep nestled against his side. River smiled to himself, letting the colors drift out of his shields, finally remembering that they had been there at all.

Looking up as Wren stood. Suddenly not ready. Uncaring that the bench was cold and hard against his ass, which had gone half numb some time ago. Strangely afraid of some look in her face. His eyebrows crinkled, body hesitating before he finally obeyed. Tricky business. No real strength in his body for lifting the sleep queen's weight. And he had to be careful with his craft,  nearly tipping her out of his arms once.

"I've got her." Draped over his arms, head pillowed once more in the hollow of his shoulder. River tucked her tight and close, and held her all the more so. He'd never held anyone before in his life. Long strides careful as he followed Wren into the temple and through the corridors to her mother's room. Long strides slowed to more evenly pace her short ones.

River glanced down at her head before sliding by her and into the room. More careful maneuvering as he positioned his sleeping bundle onto the bed. Hovering beside it, unsure what to do next. Reluctant to leave, yet uncomfortable in the room itself. Feeling like an intruder. He shifted closer to Wren, all but stepping on her toes.

"Are we coming back tomorrow?"

A potent calming spell enveloped Barbra. Helping her stay asleep as she was shifted around in River’s arms. Almost tossed right over his shoulder while he mastered his precision. Held her near like a precious child. Forcing Wren to bury down some half developed emotion. Choking jealousy before it could rise to overwhelm sense. She was the wrong queen for this young man. The only one, by Darkness’s design, but still wrong.

She did not know how to ease the sliver of anxiety she sometimes felt hinted on the surface of his psyche. Could not bare the rush of feeling petting brought on. Did not trust it, from him or from herself! Had failed to leash him. Had never really tried at all if she were honest.

Yet here was mother, soothing just by existing. Soothed by his very existence.

”I know.” She promised. And she did. Trust him that tiny bit not to drop mother or stumble in the task. All his attention turned to the aged queen in his arms. Delivered safely to her bed. Tucked in by Wren and curling around her pillow. She stood over the bed another moment. Until he settled back beside her. Fingertips brushing his palm she sighed. ”You were very good to her today, River. To me too. I appreciate it.”

Her voice was low. Not quite a whisper but only loud enough that he could hear. Too soft to disturb the drowsing queen. ”We won’t come back. This was a good visit. And I want it to stay that way. Tomorrow she might not be the same. Just seeing me, or you, might upset her. And then that will be the last memories I have of her instead of this. Understand?” Could he? She looked up at him, head almost tilting back to make up the differences in their height so she could meet his eye.

River’s fingers flexed around Wren’s. Not quite grasping the soothing tickle against his palm, but also unwilling to have it go too soon. She did not touch often, anyone, he knew because he watched, so when she did he had to fight the instinct to take it all. To cling and demand more. To draw from her all the things he wanted.

He had to be careful. Because she would not like that either.

”Why wouldn’t I be?” His head tilted toward her, eyes canting to the top of her head. He traced the elaborate coils there. Braids tucked this way and that. What had she expected? He always tried his best to be of service. Frowning, he shrugged away the confusion, drumming fingers over her knuckles. ”You’re welcome!” He assured her, because manners never did any harm.

His mother had taught him that as a boy. And Willbe often reminded him. It was okay if she wasn’t sure yet. River had plenty of time to make her sure. Sure he would too. If he doubted it he might go insane.

”We won’t?” Something about how she said it sounded to final. River interjected to break that finality. It wasn’t just tomorrow they wouldn’t be returning her tone said. Chin tilting as she looked up at him, paid attention. Made him pay attention. ”Yes.” He admitted weakly even though he didn’t want to. River didn’t want to understand at all!

He clung now. Long, bony fingers trapping hers. Holding them tight against his palm. Shaking just a little. He had never known anyone who had died. Those he’d killed weren’t the same. And this... Wren’s mother. A queen. He didn’t want to know. That soft, whistling snarl swept through his nostrils.

Scowling, River rubbed a cheek against Wren’s braids.

”Would you like me to wait outside for a while?” She wasn’t his queen or even his mother. It was okay if River died inside, as long as Wren was tended to. He was used to finding ways to soothe himself. He wasn’t so sure about Wren though.

Caught off guard by the question Wren stiffened. Almost pulled away but guilt caught her in place. Kept her still while he looked just over her head. Eyes wider as she searched for an answer. Mouth working a full second before sounds came, ”I don’t know? It isn’t your trouble to deal with I suppose?” Not his pain to feel, or his concern to suffer with. Not his problem. More guilt as she realized just what such horrible thoughts really meant. That she thought of her poor broken mother as a burden. A lick of cold ran through her chest. There was something wrong with her, she decided. Something broken or underdeveloped. Less than River kept proving he deserved.

She didn’t know how to share. Why he would want her to. She didn’t know how to need him. To trust him. Worried she might give too much. Terrified to take.

”She’s tired. In her heart, River. If she had the sense, I think she would welcome whatever is coming.” Wren couldn’t imagine. Didn’t want to know. Being broken was sad and painful she was sure. But it was not the long bouts of insanity that bothered her. It was the much rarer glimmer of lucidness. Those brief moments she caught Barbra staring at her Rose or lost in some memory and knew that she knew what was lost.

Death would be a respite. They could only hope it would come gently. Even if that hollowed a small chink of something soft in Wren’s chest. River made his funny noise again. Grip tighter. Body quivering. Danger, whispered her instincts. Her free hand curled around his bony forearm. Calm enveloping them both. They were alright. She would be alright. He didn’t want to hurt her. Just frustrated that he couldn’t have his way. Couldn’t protect.

But in protecting he might cause. That happened sometimes. trying to prevent a web leading to the warning it had shown. ”No. We’ll go.” She didn’t want to be alone. There was a strange feeling in the room. In the land maybe. Hard to read when her emotions were doing even stranger things inside her chest. Better to stay close to River, who could stop her if she made a mistake. Contain her if she lost herself.

"Hmm." River shrugged. He didn't know either. All he could do was serve best he could without direction. Driven by instinct and all the Protocol they had managed to drill into him. Day and night, over and over again. The same lessons until he could recite them back by rote, live them without even realizing. Carefully erected walls that kept his more dangerous instincts restrained.

But not wholly contained.

"I don't like," he murmured, cheek working against her hair. Trying to be still for the hand that wrapped around his arm. The warmth of her calming spell seeping through his jacket sleeve and into his body. Tried very hard not to be worried or upset. Queens weren't supposed to die though. Not even old broken ones like Wren's mother. Taking advantage of her nearness, River slipped his fingers through Wren's. Leaned a little closer until her shoulder rubbed against his arm.

Pressed his lips into her hair. There was little difference between a kiss and a cheek, after all. Breathed her in, blonde flyaways tickling his nose. Steadied himself for her.

"Okay, we'll go." Tongue tasting the strands before he moved away. One last glance at the sleeping queen. Squeezing her hand, River tugged Wren gently from the room. Half tempted to seal the door behind them so no one could break her sleep. But it would be cruel to confine her in solitude now, in case there were others who wished to say good bye.

A queen always had a court, after all. He'd meant to tell Wren that earlier. Whether she ruled or not.
