The Body

Height: 6'0
Body Type: Athletic
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Green

Appearance:
In public Valor is the portrait of a  Modern Glacian man. Tailored uniforms for public appearances and an annual wardrobe stipend ensures he maintains a professional appearance on land. In fact a small part of his squadron training included lessons on the power of simple fashion choices and sexual appeal. Despite what some might insist attractiveness is a tool. It’s easier for a handsome, neatly dressed, and well spoken man to do business. And Glacia is all about business.

Privately, and when working he has a much more relaxed appearance. Thick woolen sweaters and sturdy cotton trousers to keep him warm. Furs in the frigid temperatures of Odense. Underneath it all a well formed body resides. Solid now that the softness of his youth is melting away. Not quite ready for hard edges, but the lines are there and a hand can feel the muscles working beneath his skin. A fresh tattoo dominates his back. A rune circle for safe travels centered between his shoulder blades, and detailed wings of a gyrfalcon on either side of that. Down one arm are his oldest tattoos- three small runes. The first done when he was only fourteen. One for happiness, one for strength, one for traveling. His left hand has a wide depiction of a sea eagle, the symbol of his City and Queen.

Princely as they come he has a winsome smile that rarely leaves his face. He makes an inviting figure despite his caste and jewels. Sometimes even disguising both to put foreign queens at ease. His crown of golden hair compliments his bright blue eyes- both hallmarks of his ancestry. The hair was inherited from his mother, and grows entirely too fast. Most of the time he is in need of a good trim, but the time between neatly cut and long again is frustratingly short.

Craft Weaknesses: Compulsion Spells, Locks, and Summoning from his psychic cabinet- Valor’s always pulling the wrong things out!

Personal Strengths: Valiant! Easy going
Personal Weaknesses: Spoiled rotten, arrogant

Personality:
Raised at the heart of the court Valor found himself marked early for greatness. Expectations were leveled on him the day he made his birthright ceremony. He was groomed to be a good leader. Allowed to be assertive while reminded not to lose the concern and kindness that made him easily approachable to even the lowest members of society. At the hands of apprentice Queens, a doting mother, and even a bothersome cousin he was taught to respect his caste. To take no shame in soothing the violent throws of his emotions instead of ignore them. Tempers quickly tamed by chilly fingertips and soft words. Making him self-indulgent, perhaps, and given him a delicate ego. Never left to his own devices or to fend for himself. The gift of self-control, though, has been an undeniable boon to his happiness and position in life.

Valor is not all mollycoddling and pouts, though. He would deny his boyishness even as it flashes in his smiles. Smiles always given brightly and freely. Passionate about his work and hobbies. An engaged member of his crew, doing his share of the work and maintaining his ship with a palpable affection for the vessel. The desire to live up to his name is there. Courageous and loyal til death, how else could he have earned the name? He is a man of action that needs other to do remind him of the broader picture.

A laughing young man that wants to master the role set on his shoulders. Desperate to bring pride to his family, his Queen, and his City.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Hranfast Av Odense | Father | Rose to Opal Warlord
  • Thora Swordmaker | Mother | Rose to Purple Dusk Witch
  • Sibbe | Older Sister | Purple Dusk to Sapphire Queen
  • Essi av Kisdy | Cousin | Summer-sky to Opal Hearth Witch
  • Sandra | Aunt| Summer-sky to Green Hearth Witch
  • Alexander | Uncle | Summer-sky to Opal Warlord
  • Isari | Bonded Kindred | Blood witch

History:
Boyhood was a wonderful thing! Born on a snowy night- like every man of Odense since the first days of Glacia- Vakri had a particularly easy childhood. They lived in a longhouse in the shadow of the Sjefhem. From the window he could watch the Queen tend her patch of vegetables every day. Smiling as a baby, leaving handprints on the window pane. Shouting questions when he was old enough, or calling over her son for adventures. Inside the great fortress his father worked as a second circle guard. His mother was a greatly respected woman for her talent as a blacksmith. It helped too that three years before Vakri was born she had ensured the continuation of the city’s livelihood by birthing a queenling. There was a grandmother until he was two, then she joined the Darkness from the comfort of sleep. An Aunt, uncle, and cousin also.

With busy parents and a very important sister Vakri was often overlooked. Training gave Sibbe little time for her baby brother, but she always came rushing in with soothing hands when they were needed most. After she made her Birthright ceremony her lack of time and training both intensified. The Purple Dusk was quite nearly an assurance of Dark Jewels to come. So it was his hearth witch cousin Essi that did most of the baby tending. Wiping his nose and tying his boot laces. At five years old he started school. Every single day she waited to walk home with him. They went on adventures together. Vakri following Damion, and Essi following Vakri. Always cleaning his dirt smudged cheeks with her spit damp apron tails. A friend and a comfort, even when he was old enough to start pretending she was neither.

Like most Blood will agree, his life changed when he made his Birthright. The Ceremony itself went as anyone would expect. It was Frjosemi, and he had waited impatently for the morning processions and shared breakfast to end. His parents gently argued between themselves the entire time. Father insisting Vakri should wait another year, ten being the normal age for the ceremony. Vakri had not wanted to wait. He was ready. Ready enough, at least. And charmed his mother into agreeing. In the end no one could say it was a mistake. Not when he grinned over the Green in his palms. The bragging lasted… well… it never really ended.

The Green made young Vakri important too. He was swept into the world of court training. Learned Protocol and practiced on his own sister. Mastered his temper and Shieldcraft. Learned a thousand lessons about the roles of Dark Jewels in maintaining Odense’s existence. The decision, the final choice, of what he would do with his life had always been for Vakri to make. They let him try a handful of short apprenticeships to make up his mind. But the boy had always known. From the first time the shadow of a ship blotted out the sun, drawing his infant eyes skyward. Every child in the city spoke of joining the Squadron. Thought they were destined to crew the ships and told stories of the deeds they would do. For Vakri the calling never ended.

Just before his sixteenth birthday it was decided he could begin his Squadron training. He was placed under the apprenticeship of Captain Baldur on the warship Sparrowhawk. Like every young man aboard he waited impatiently for a chance to prove himself. Instead there was a slew of decks in need of swabbing and shield maintaining to do. The next year passed quickly. Consumed with the adventure and danger of escorting duties. Sparrowhawk was a lead vessel for protecting the larger cargo and passenger ships. There were squirmishes and standoffs, plenty of chance for daring young men to earn their reputations.

Vakri’s moment came the spring before his second anniversary. Fyrkat, the long held rivals of Odense, had offered a major produce importer a better deal. The threat of a food shortage was looming, and attempts to deal with either party had failed. Raids and piracy were already a longstanding tradition in Glacia. And the Sparrowhawk was one of the fastest vessels around. They decided to take their chances in a confrontation.

In the course of their standoff both ships took heavy fire. As the smaller of the two Sparrowhawk had a proportionally smaller crew. Vakri was forced to stay behind while the boarding party swarmed the Fyrkat decks. At first he was disappointed, but something went very wrong. An unintended explosion of blunt Craft injured several members of both crews and took out the Sparrowhawks sail. With the Fyrkat captain unconscious their ship began to fall. The only thing that kept it aloft was Vakri. Cross legged in the Crow’s Nest so he could watch the fighting. Every ounce of his concentration on lowering both ships carefully to the ground. It was considered an Odense victory. They took half the provisions and left. Only three men died, none of them from the Sparrowhawk crew. With a disabled sail a wide shield of Green propelled them home.

All good stories spread like wildfire, especially in the cold reaches of Glacia. Many would have let the Fyrkat ship drop, shielding only their own men. As a few more years ticked by, and a handful of similar instances took place Vakri found word of his courage and determination to see the most men possible return home preceded him. At some point more people called him Valor than did not. Even his own parents.

At twenty one Valor née Vakri swore an oath to Lady Frigg and Odense. As countless others had before he took his knees. Proud and eager as her blood was mixed into ink to tattoo her symbol across his hand. For the love Odense and good of Glacia he was marked a man. In the evening his Offering was made. At dawn the city celebrated his Descent into the Grey. The uncut jewel seething raw power into the air. Without a setting it is stored in a silken bag, usually kept vanished unless need arises. He is not yet comfortable with it.

When another ship was commissioned to be built for the city Valor waited on edge to hear if he would hold a position in the new crew. For weeks he paced ship decks, ale houses, and even the Sjefhem anxiously. Glimmering with newness on the icy shore The Falconer was a sight that took his breath away. Not a small but fast warship as the Sparrowhawk had been. Nor was she was hulking passenger vessel made for comfort and luxury. She was a workhorse- sized to hold a good haul without compromising speed. Cozy crew cabins, vibrant red sails, and his.
