Irisviel wondered if it was the calm before or after the storm. Surely it was time for the upheaval to be over.

Beside her the coffee cooled, chin cupped in the heel of her palm, fingers stretching across her lips and cheek. One leg dangled over the knee of the other, bobbing softly as she thought. At least Amets' rut was over, and she could release the shields that had kept the worse of whatever was happening from filling the house. Protecting his privacy as well as the sensibilities of others.

She had given him a day. One day before he had to present himself to her.

Iris looked up as he entered. Taking stock. She'd not seen him since the beginning of this journey. Not sure if she had wanted to see him. Afraid what she might face in his eyes. In his mind, should she pry within it. Secluded by Josiah. Separated by his rut. Her lips slowly formed a smile as she studied him. A wicked thing that promised nothing good for Amets.

"I spent half a season protecting you from her," was her droll comment. Half a season of inserting herself between her escort and Shalador's healer. Shielding him from the girl hell bent on dragging him to her bed. And now he had dragged her to his. "I could have spent that time shopping, you know." She was just glad Marilena was still alive. Relations between Little Terreille and Shalador were likely to suffer had Amets accidentally killed the chit. Even if it was rut. Lady Araceli, Irisveil got the feeling, was fond of her younger sister.

"You are well?" She gestured for him to sit, voicing the customary question she asked every time he returned from a sojourn away. Taking his rut to the Red Moon Houses, where Iris paid for any damages from the court's funds. Sent gifts for their willingness to host him and treat him gently. Not all would tolerate a black widow warlord prince. And his Sapphire marked him a double danger. A beast apart in a province full of terrors.

I don't worry
life is a journey

One day was usually enough to compose himself before he had to face Iris. One day hadn’t felt like nearly enough time this time. But it was expected of him and Amets had no desire to have Iris sending for him a second time. A second time likely wouldn’t be so leisurely or pleasant. Which was how he’d extracted himself from his bed and present company.

Assessing and waiting, Amets studied Iris from the door, a ghost of a probe stretching into the space between them. Irisviel was as he expected to find her given the circumstances. Though the smile that greeted him made him wary. Too slow to be safe. Too wicked to mean anything but chaos for him. Maybe he’d been better off staying in bed delaying the inevitable.

No maybe not.

His bed or rather who had taken up residence was the whole heart of this and Amets groaned audibly. “Yes, you did and you did more than enough shopping in between to make up for it.” He’d seen more of Shalador in that season and not enough chasing Iris through the shops. “She’s still alive if you’re wondering and slated to leave after she finally gets some sleep.” Sami had turned up as soon as Iris’s shields had dropped. Huffing at him for stealing away one of his strongest healers and shooing him to make sure he hadn’t killed her in the middle of his rut. A rut he only half remembered and something he only half minded.

Balancing on the edge of a chair, he nodded. “Well as always.” He was rested, no not fully rested but more relaxed than he’d been in weeks. “And you, Irisviel?” His fingers drifted over the desk, a silent question lingering there. Physically he could see no issues but the residence still reeked of murder and fear. Still reeked enough that Amets felt compelled to ask and fret.

“Not according to my pocketbook.” Or would that be his? Irisviel had been living out of Amets’ pockets by the end of the trip. Not that she’d had the heart for shopping by then. Certain she would have been completely crazed if she hadn’t had him as an anchor. Something, someone from home. And yet, she did not open her barriers to his probe. Not even the first.

“I assumed as much. You haven’t killed anyone yet, and Sami isn’t here railing at me.” Iris’ smile was tight. She did not understand the sudden change, the shift from no to yes. It was another question added to the pile of questions she already had. An inconsistency. It would be easy to blame it on his rut. Iris wanted to lay the burden of proof on overriding instinctual emotions.

But she was currently finding trust a hard coin to come by.

“Good.” Good. Well was how she wanted him. Well and pried open so she could pick his psyche. She glanced at the hand that crept along her desk. Fingers extended in a gesture. A gesture of what? Was she meant to take them? To soothe him? Herself? Usually she knew. But recently Iris questioned everything and everyone and it left her with doubts. Left her questioning herself.

“I am also well. Recovered.” She looked back up. It was truth. Josiah had done his duty by her. So had Samirvar. No one would ever know she’d taken a dagger to the hip, not unless they asked. And her Jewels weighed light upon her body.

Releasing her face, Iris leaned into the desk, fingers meeting his half way. Inches between them. A gesture unfulfilled.

Suddenly she did not know where to begin.

“According to mine you did.” His wallet had been aching for months after but he’d been happy to keep Iris occupied. Anything to avoid worrying about a broken gate and being trapped in Shalador. That seemed like a lifetime away now. A lifetime away when he didn’t have to question the shift in Iris’s openness to his surface level fussing. Drawing back the probe quietly, Amets frowned but left well enough alone.

Something had shifted since Magda’s betrayal and death. Somewhere between when he’d seen her last and now even. It confused and concerned him all in the same breath.

Amets’ frown only deepened along with his confusion. No one yet. The yet left a nasty taste in his mouth. There was an expectation there that he would normally ignore if everything wasn’t so raw for him. It must have been the rut. “No I haven’t and I hope I never do.” Not that he could control what happened in a rut as much as he’d like to.

He nodded wordlessly then. Recovered was good, less to fuss and fret over because of his absence even as confusion threatened to gnaw a hole in his stomach. He wouldn’t pry into how much or how little she had slept and rested. Josiah had seen to it. Sami too, somewhere between putting people back together.

He was eyeing her openly now, confusion etched on his face. Close enough to touch and close enough that the final inches left him questioning. It could be any number of things. Any number of reasons but none were comforting. Amets almost whined, the desperate sound swallowed before it came out. He didn’t want to be seen as desperate, especially when he couldn’t admit that to himself. He was bold enough though - desperate enough really - to reach out and link his fingers with hers. “What happened since I last saw you, Iris?” What did I do wrong? he didn’t dare utter the second, desperate question. Something had shifted between them and whatever good mood he’d mustered that morning was melting away.

She softened, briefly. The frown that drew his mouth down pulling at her. It was a sensitive subject, she knew. Hadn’t she just been the focal point of such whispers? Violence was inherent in their blood, but some still shied from the truth of it.

“I didn’t mean to imply it, Amets. You have always exhibited good control. And judgment” Flawless, almost. Iris remembered the pride that she’d felt when he had faced Prince Medin with such calm certainty. “Besides, you are not responsible for what happens during your rut. Not the violence. Nor the cocks crow of a job well done, either.” She couldn’t help the jab.

Confusing and fascinating. He’d never stayed for its duration before. And she had felt the thrum of it through the walls. Through her shields. Irisviel wondered what purpose it served. For good or ill? Was it a testament to too much control? Not enough? Or just the way it ran over, the beast that lived in all of them. An outlet for the more primal urges. One that offered the balm of forgiveness.

Iris accepted his fingers. Her own twining with his. It was a habitual reaction. She never had been shy with physical affection. She tried to be aware and respectful of personal boundaries, but she was a tactile creature. Soothed by touch, by physical nearness, and the bond that ran between her and those in her service. She did not know how to deny the link he sought.

She did, however, know how to keep her face expressionless. How to limit the affect of his own apparent confusion. How to keep close secrets, feelings. Doubts.

“I have decided to keep it.” Everything. Everything had changed. They were her greatest weakness. Her biggest threat. How could she trust them or herself? “The territory.” She amended. He was watching her. Irisviel looked back. What did he search for? Her thumb stroked his fingers absently. “Even after Magda’s surviving court members have been found and tried.” She watched him.

“Seems there is a rebellion to be snuffed out too, on top of the food shortages.” But he would help with one of those, Irisviel was sure. His bedding Lady Marilena had planted the thought into her head. Surely there must be a connection, an affection, for him to choose her, and perhaps Iris could take advantage of it. She would not force him. But it seemed best.

Even if he proved true, she thought it would be best.

“And I mean to see it done.” Would he flinch?

LIFE IS A JOURNEY

There was a slip of the Iris he knew, the one that made jabs that he could usually answer or return. Not this time though. Amets wasn’t sure he quite trusted himself to even try answering. It was the rut and Magda’s murder and the betrayals that had set it all off. It had to be. It had to be for the sake of his sanity though that seemed to have been forfeit the moment he’d signed his contract. Or perhaps even before that.

At least she hadn’t pulled away. Not physically, no, but as much as the casual touch settled him it unnerved him. What had happened? Other than the betrayals and bloodshed that had landed them in Walcourt in the first place. Or maybe that was the heart of it. Betrayal and unfamiliar surroundings and a rut he hadn’t anticipated complicating matters even further. So many maybes and not even certain answers that wouldn’t keep him awake at night.

She was keeping it.

Amets’s confusion shifted from the distance to what Iris was saying. She was going to keep the territory. There was no joking there, Irisviel had already made up her mind and Amets turned the idea over in his mind carefully before nodding. “You deserve it.” Who among them could truly argue that Iris didn’t deserve the territory seat? It had been hard fought for and won, not at all how he would have expected the transition but it was what it was. “Have you told the others?” There would have to be arrangements made and any number of desperately unhappy people pacified.

The mention of rebellion made him frown again, a skittering memory of blood and pleading. The food shortages couldn’t be helped, not by his hand at any rate. The rebellion, perhaps, if Iris let him slip the leash again. “I am ever at your disposal, Iris, as always. You know that.” All she had to do was to ask. Maybe it would even settle whatever had brought on this abrupt, whatever this was. He could hope.

He did not answer her teasing. Perhaps he, like she, didn't really have the heart for it. Watching her as she watched him. Both of them trying to find the frayed ends of a snapped thread. Fit the pieces back together. Iris balked at the idea though. He was hers but right now she could not be his in return. She couldn't trust him.

Eyes narrowing, Irisviel flicked a glance over his face. The waves and curls of his hair. Stroked the outer barriers of his mind with her Grey. Testing. Did she dare? Would he let her? And if he did not, would that stop her? What if the answers she sought were not those she wanted?

Could she... kill him?

The conversation shifted. And Iris did not have to learn how far she'd go.

"You think so?" Her smile was amused. Deserved it. Irisviel did not think so. Who could deserve such a thing? What did a queen do to make her deserving of such an honor? Slaughter an entire court? Magda had been chosen because she'd managed trade agreements no one else had. Iris wasn't giving anyone the choice of it. She was taking it. Did that make her deserving? "Only Josiah." Softly, in the dark. She would have told Amets, too, that she didn't believe she was. Deserving. But this was another lifetime.

In this one, she couldn't whisper secrets into his hair.

Iris squeezed his hand. Hers. He'd signed a contract. Sworn service. Pestered her when she'd been a girl going about her widow's training. Strange creature. With his fits of silence like fits of temper. Amets with his paints and worried frowning. Of course he was at her disposal. And he would serve her well.

In Shalador.

She steeled herself, a breath drawn in through her nose, nostrils pinching. Piercing flashing.

"I'm glad you speak so. I'm sending you home with Lady Marilena, to Shalador." There. No going back now. Iris withdrew her hand, leaning back into her chair, queen and queen only. "Once there, you're going to secure trade agreements for food. Any you can lay contract on. Fish, meat, but especially grains and fruit and vegetables." Iris called in a ring, a second to the one she'd given him years before. "Promise whatever you have to, Amets. Just get my people food." A gleaming signet that would give him the power to do just that.

Iris would pay. Life's blood, if she had to.

“I believe so, yes.” If the other queens had objections then they would voice them soon enough. Only Josiah. Of course Josiah was the first to know. He’d expected nothing less. The two were close enough that he sometimes envied Josiah the privilege. Sometimes that he dismissed as silly more often than not.

Now was not one of those silly sometimes.

Amets was certain his heart had stopped long before he forced himself to remember how to breathe. She was sending him away. Away to Shalador. For food and anything he could secure to help them. It was practical yes but mother night he would’ve preferred Iris strangle him and be done with it. It would’ve been faster, more merciful too.

Away, away, away.

The words were a drumbeat in time with his heart. Away to Shalador, away across a gate that had threatened to seal shut forever the last time. Would the gate even work to bring him back? Did he even want it to? He wasn’t sure.

Irisviel the Queen, not Irisviel the Friend waited with commands to be obeyed and Amets couldn’t even coach his face into the courtly mask he’d learned. Didn’t want to try when he felt so close to crying. What was the point when it was just the two of them anyway? He had pledged his service years ago and reaffirmed it without hesitation mere moments ago . There was no going back, he’d sworn his service and he’d see it through even if he felt like drowning. He had never known how to walk away after all.

“Trade agreements for food. Of course, Lady.” The response was automatic, something just slightly left of him even being aware of what he was saying. Drawing his hand back slowly, Amets sunk into his seat while his throat worked around the lump forming there. “Will...will that be all, Lady Crag?” his voice was cracking with the effort it took to stay seated at all. Tearing his eyes away from Iris’s finally, he focused on the ring, familiar and foreign, a leash that felt like it was slowly choking him. Maybe she’d change her mind, decide to put him out of his misery and send someone else. It was unlikely though, Amets knew his luck had never run that well.

Best to keep her barriers close to his emotions. Probes and powers tucked carefully within. Not that she needed either, Amets' feelings were writ plain upon his face. He made little effort to hide them. A distant sort of look, as if he were retreating within. Hiding. A searing behind his eyes.

Pain. Pain inflicted by her hand. But it was necessary, and while Irisviel hated to hurt him, hurt him she must. Her territory was more important than his feelings. And his service, sworn and prophesied by Darkness, was more important than any guilt she might feel. He could have been the enemy, she reminded herself.

And sending him away to parlay on behalf of her people might not be the safest way to prove it one way or the other. She could have been dooming them all to avoid the simplest answer. To crack open his skull, peel away his barriers, and find the truth out for herself. And if he were true, what trust would be left?

Separated.

"Yes, Prince Moralez. That will be all." Iris stood, circled her desk half way. Stared. Friend? Foe? He had secrets, Irisviel knew that much. What they were she'd never pried. Let him share as he liked or hide what he did not wish to share. Days were different now. Mysteries and unknowing weighed on her. But he'd always served her well, and never done her any ill on accident or on purpose.

"Maybe you will be able to attend the festivals again." Perhaps enjoy them more, now, with his new companion. "Darkness grant you a swift and safe journey, Prince." Iris spun a ring on her finger, twisting it round and round. "And I thank you for your confidence." It had been a long time since she'd ruled without him as her escort.

If she hadn't been so full of mistrust and doubt, she might have thought how strange and potentially disastrous it was, to send so many of those closest to her away just before she staked her claim.
