Essian Shriewhy

The Basics

Full Name: Essian Shriewhy
Age: 300
Gender/Pronouns: she/hers

Ethnicity: Osheah
Birthplace: Aksavi
Current Location: Askavi
Profession: Court Seer

Caste: Black Widow Queen
Birthright Jewel: Blood Opal (Cut #90)
Offering Jewel: Red (Cut #76)

Face Claim: Logan Browning

The Body

Height: 5'3 / 5'10 winged
Body Type: Flighty
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Orange-gold

Appearance:
Striking, strong jawed and lush mouthed, Shriewhy carries herself lightly. As though, despite being considered wingless, she's ready to take to the air at a moments notice. Piercing eyes like fresh embers, there's no doubt of her long-lived nature. People just struggle to figure out what exactly that nature is.

Lean, muscle unhidden, Shriewhy has an... eclectic taste in clothes. Sleek lines, subtle, nuanced details, delicately chosen accents. Bright, loud colors, flouncy sleeves, complicated designs. Long nails, jewelry limited to the necklaces that carry her Brithright and Offering. Frequently barefaced, makeup used sparingly, Shriewhy makes for a unique looking Seer, a confusing Queen. There's an intensity to her that's unsettling, beyond the whirlwind wardrobe, the seemingly transparent longing for the sky. Her eyes are predator's eyes, sharp and guileless.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts
Tangled Webs
Swift Shifter
Form Stability
Calming Touch
Craft Weaknesses: Poison Crafting, Queens Gift, Heat and Cooling Spells

Personality:
Better acclimated to the world outside the rotating families of the parcels and the deep-wood homes than some, Shriewhy is still an odd duck outside her people's feathered reach. Intermittent connection beyond the Osheah shadows has blended into her a mixed understanding of people, and ranging travel to satisfy her wanderlust and obligatory tour means that her opinions are frequently influenced by attitudes outside her immediate area. Blunt, and sometimes cutting, Shriewhy alternates between not giving ground on one subject and bending fully on another. The things she knows she knows, but where her knowledge is lacking she is an eager student. This can often be aggravating, as she can pester and prod until she's made people fed up with her.

On the other hand, there are long stretches of time where she seeks solitude and quiet, and can be snappy and temperamental if that's interrupted. Unless a specific obligation requires her to remain wingless, she spends these times aloft, hunting and surveying the land. From a primarily nocturnal family, it has taken decades of practice for Shriewhy to get used to being active during daylight hours, and she still tends to sleep from late morning to afternoon. Being awake at peak sunlight hours is irritating and draining to her, and she's exponentially grumpier if she's awake before dusk. While the relative times may change with the seasons, allowing for longer 'daytime' periods where she tolerates being awake, she's still snappy about it.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Whyskree | Mother | Rose to Opal Healer

History:
Birth
Daughter of a Healer quickly turning toward the deep wood homes. Small and quiet. One of three children of the parcel, a farmstead who's closest neighbors were wingless blood and landen. A quiet pocket, more protected than most of her people's secrets. Messages passed between them and Osheah too gone into the deep wood to leave. This fascinated her, the great shadows of her people that filled the trees. Not close enough to visit, young and jewel-less, but the stories of them furnished her thoughts.

Curious and demanding even at a young age, watched by her mother and the standing Steward of their home. Masquerading as mixed, wingless Eyriens or less. Shriewhy knew her wings were the things of secrets. Something inherited from the night during which her family was most active. She didn't have them yet, but she would. She could feel it.

Kept close as she grew, lead by the Steward through the town on little errands, she began her socialization as her caste grew clearer. Friends, of a kind, with the wingless children, the landen youth, they called her 'weird', while her Steward called her Shian for lack of a better false-name. She would choose her own, later, and was adamant that Shian would not be her final choice.

Queen, certainly, the adults whispered, and something darker. Something that gave her vivid dreams and tangled nightmares. Wings and blood and webs.

Birthright
Shriewhy chose her Eyrien name herself the day of her birthright. Sixteen and headstrong in her castes. Essian, for the first letter of her true name, a wing-name meaning nothing. She was young, opinionated, fiercely against the Eyrien treatment of everyone different under Witch's rule. Fiercely against Witch, and determined to see the world beyond her quiet homestead and know the difference between her shadow and freedom. Determined that her tour would span territories and realms if she could make it so.

Far, far into the deep wood she ran, under the great silent wings of her mother, until the trees absorbed even the crush of her feet against the forest floor. Far, far into herself she flew, on wings the Darkness told her would be great, and when she emerged triumphant and bloody with her Blood Opal in her hand, she declared she would begin her training for the shift immediately. She would not be bound to the earth when the sky was theirs too.

When she takes to the air for the first time, several months later and brimming with energy, Shriewhy knows her place. There is a part of her that calls to the land and that responds to it in a way she can barely articulate. Her tour will be long, ranging, and she will not return to the parcel she was born to. Whyskree knows, too.

The month following her first shift, they slip out into the night, away from Askavi, to a parcel where Shriewhy will learn her second caste and Queen's Craft. This she counts as the beginning of her tour.

Virgin Night
A dozen homes from her birth place, Offering on the horizon and mother returned to the secret shadows of the wood, Shriewhy takes an age-mate as her partner. Guided by a parcel Priestess, she finds unique comfort in their closeness. Sees sprawling connections in her dreams and webs following. A family, a community, connection. Webs uncertain as to what type of closeness, or how those connections are built, she strives to find them. Her wings are restless. She travels on.

Offering
High in the rocky peaks at the border of Dena Nehele, Shrie ascends. Night falls and she takes up her feathers. Climbing, climbing, high into the thin cold air. Only the burn of her muscles and the sound of her breathing, and the stars, silent and bright.

Dawn. The hungry dark pull of her Red heavy, heady, in her talons.

Travel and Court
Shriewhy ranges, far and wide and, despite her best efforts, across only one realm. Age softens her, gives her scope. Her hate of Askavi's treatment of its wingless residents never truly fades, but she sees it for what it is. The darkness of people is a darkness exacerbated by the darkness of their ruler, and where her shadow fell so too did her hate. Shrie was lucky. Hidden in the folded shade of her parcels, and fleeing in her youth, she escaped that tide. It swam around her, stretched beside her, and flew with her wings, but she remained apart from it. Wingless, mixed. Secret.

In her movement between parcels, a seed is planted. She knows not where it comes from, or who gives it to her, but it grows. An idea: to stretch, beyond the shelter of the Osheah, into the world. Into the lands and courts and politics of their neighbors. To place a talon on the heartbeat of the people who outnumber them, and learn where the cracks that shake them form.

Connections, webs and blood.

She never does return to the parcel of her birth. Sweeping back to Askavi after decades away, emboldened by the idea of integrating more fully with people she has only ever observed or interacted with in a peripheral way, she settles in the turbulent lake district. The challenge excites her. She garners a place in court for her Craft and her keen attention, for her knowledge. She weaves webs for women who are difficult to be swayed in any direction. She sends word to the parcels of the area, the slowly returning pockets of her people.

And then a young Queen and her winged bodyguard sweep in, and turn Shriewhy's world further into chaos.
