Eunji Khal

The Basics

Age: 321 as of AW103
Gender/Pronouns: female/she/her

Ethnicity: Long Lived
Birthplace: Machou, Dhemlan
Current Location: Heyasi, Dhemlan
Profession: Contender Queen

Caste: Queen
Birthright Jewel: Tiger Eye (CUT 36)
Offering Jewel: Purple Dusk (CUT 10)

Face Claim: Yoon Young Bae

The Body

Height: 5'7"
Body Type: Sleek
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Dhemlan Gold

Appearance:
Appearances is everything. Eunji understands this on an instinctive level. How fashion can dictate the reactions of others. How the shape of her shoulders or the way she places her hands during a conversation can change the tide of opinion. The correct shade of red to paint her lips to capture attention without sparking lust. Listen Red, she calls it privately to herself.

So she understands how to style her long dark hair depending on her mission. How to dress to garner allies and enemies. All the subtle details of dress and grooming are not ones she leaves to her maids, and her tailor is a very dear friend. Well paid and blooded.

Too tall, Eunji has spent years learning how to work around this disadvantage. People are naturally inclined to protect what is smaller than them. Delicately wrought women. Young children. But Eunji is tall enough to be intimidating for a woman. Especially a queen. But rarely does she want to be intimidating. Not when she doesn't possess the Jewels to back it up.

So she diets. Keeps her figure delicate. Fragile. Plates half empty, sun shaded when she walks. All to cultivate the right allure. Her body is her shield. Calling forth the need to protect. To serve.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15/15pts
Blood Bonds
Compulsion Spells
Passing through Objects
Craft Weaknesses: Calming Touch. Reading the Land.

Personal Strengths: Ruthless.
Personal Weaknesses: Unable to see people as more than tools.

Personality:
Eunji's face is a lie. The sweetness, the innocence. The crafted anger that doesn't sit quite right on her features. A face too soft for hard expressions. Inside she is a cunning pit of serpents.

In truth there is little humanity in Eunji. Her compassion lacks depth. A response learned by those around her, triggered by circumstance, but never honestly felt. Her love is selfish; Eunji does not love the person, but what they do for her. Another mask she's learned to wear from watching the dance of life around her. The looks her mother cast upon her father. The proud kisses her father laid upon their brows.

She is incapable of friendship. Those closest to her are her most treasured tools. Praised and lavished with gifts. She appreciates them. Like a fine silk or a master skill. They are her finest gemstones, her most treasured possessions. But she loves them no more than any other thing, she's just more careful about casting them aside once their usefulness has come to an end. People frown on such things.

Her family is viewed through a slightly different lens. They are the bulwark that cannot be bypassed. They will go with her always. Be with her always. Eunji will lift them up with her, so long as they don't fall. She will allow none to blemish her reputation. Aunties forgotten in generous giving when their lips proved too loose. Uncles sent away when they proved too harsh.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Name | Father | Yellow to Summer-sky Prince
  • Name | Relation | Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk hearth witch
  • Name | Brother | Opal to Opal Warlord Prince

History:

childhood
Eunji's first, real, formative memory is one of duty. She stood beside her Auntie during the Raima festival. Out of solidarity rather than fear, she held her Auntie's hand. It was the look of the thing, she understood. The queen holding the hand of a promising child while people came to pay their respects. A line of dark crowns exposed to them in bows. She remembers too walking behind her Auntie as she bled upon the fields. Ladles of pink water dripped onto unfurling leaves.

At her Birthright Ceremony her destiny was secured. Her Tiger Eye sat in the palms of her hands, its squared edges sharp. She would be a queen. Though not one of great power, she remembered hearing someone whisper. Eunji hardened her heart against such things. Let them doubt. There was greatness in her future. All those bowed heads had been a promise. She saw no one bowing to them!

adolescence
Eunji did not know if others noticed, but she did. As she grew into consciousness, no longer existing in the ignorance of a child. She saw how others acted differently from how she felt. She had mimicked them as all children mirrored those raising them. Learning the world from the reactions of people, just as they learned from tutors and teachers.

Eunji was just learning something different, and there was no one to guide her on this path. She was different. Not just in caste; hardly in caste, really, there were plenty of other queens across the territory. But inside. She did not feel the burn of tears unless she pinched them into existence. Could not recognize the squeals of delight in her heart even as she imitated them.

I love you was something she said, but not something she felt.

Yet her mind was so free. Her purpose so clear. Eunji did not feel deficient. She felt empowered. Unlike those around  her, she was not weak to manipulation through her emotions. Surely this was a blessing from her ancestors. Another layer of protection added to those of the family and friends who came to her side in service.

majority
Eunji was aware of the heirlooms sold to buy her the best tutors to be had in their region. Precious stones and jewelry that had graced the necks of generations. Her mother and grandmother always did so quietly, but these were items she had seen lifted reverently from their boxes, history explained in storybook fashion. And she knew she was worthy of these sacrifices, but thought they should not be necessary.

The promise her Tiger Eye offered was more than enough. Even her Tiger Eye itself should have been plenty. She was still a queen. Service to her was service to glory. She would never be another Witch, but Eunji was certain she could reach similarly lofty heights. And with better poise. Witch forgot the world was watching. Or maybe she just did not care, her Black bloating her ego.

Eunji was not sure she could blame her. But she knew she could certainly do better. She cultivated her companions carefully, and studied with resolution rather than fervor. Not naturally bright, Eunji was clever and good at compartmentalizing. Her mind was open rather than resentful or anxious, which made her a good student. She learned, and applied the lessons of the past to the future.

History was a loop, forever repeating itself. She had intentions to break the chain and create a new orbit. One which centered around herself. But she had to do it carefully. To lead people down a new path while making it look like the same one. A pilgrimage, if you will, one that had to start with a few trustworthy souls. A priestess to help guide Eunji in the more obscure whispers from Mother Night. To lead her beneath her Tiger Eye and to her Purple Dusk.

Ceremony held after Eunji passed her Territory Exams. A small but prestigious school had courted her into attending their halls. And Eunji had plucked at the brightest minds in her class, teasing hearts to her side. It was of little use to wait for them to come to her. Eunji preferred to choose who served her interest. A warrior did not wait for a sword to find its way to his hand. He had one crafted to sit balanced in his palm, and drew it when he was prepared to do battle.

They were her swords. Her shields. An inner circle before she ever formed a court. And any who did not pass their first try were cast adrift again without remorse.

With her Purple Dusk set in a series of tear drops up her wrist, Eunji gracefully accepted a station within the lower circles of the province queen's court. Contracting some of her companions to accompany with her. Others were of better service elsewhere. Strung across the territory like a fisherman's net stretching across the sea.

Eunji tested them as she trained. As she climbed. Their loyalty. Their usefulness. Friends and family alike. Shuffled like cards depending on their abilities. She allowed them to choose the male to see her through her virgin night. Watching and eavesdropping to see how they formulated the criteria and chose. Accepting only an acceptable match. Pleased that they chose so well and carefully. Mostly with herself for having trained them so precisely in serving her.

It was an affair easily born. The man was not displeasing to look at, and the physical pleasure was surprisingly pleasant. Eunji could see why it was such a favored past time, or tool.

Eunji's star rose steadily, and carefully. She did not wish to shine bright, not when Witch looked with so much displeasure on Machou. Those were eyes she did not want centered on herself, not just yet. She saw but did not feel the injustice done to her people by their Queen of Queens. Her friends told her of the troubles that spread across the territory and outside of it. All of them young and aspiring, writing home with the news of their travels or service.

Eunji kept their letters in her cabinet. Taking them out at night and spreading them across her bed like mahjong tiles. Her foresight garnered the small district she had been granted to rule better trade agreements. Her advice saw them in surplus of the right goods at the right times. And rarely without even as Witch tried to snuff the bisected hearts of the people. Eunji never could not understand why Witch decided to fear the Shikao sect rather than use it.

But she also could not understand how fear was not always a choice.

It took years. Whole lifetimes, even, for the unfortunate short lived people of the realms, but Eunji took her place at the pinnacle of the Machou court. From Eighth Circle to First, from apprentice to Province Queen herself. It was from this seat she rode out the horror of Witch's fall. Maybe Eunji could have warned her, if Witch had bothered to ask. Eunji could not say she would have told if she had been asked.

History itself should have taught Witch all she needed to know. People did not like a tyrant. Not even Blood little better than beasts.

current events
With the fall of the Territory Queen, Eunji finds herself at the Territory Seat. A dear cousin has served within the Territory Court for many years. She is not a skilled queen, but still family enough that Eunji must offer her support. And her voice to the fervor. There is a new Territory Queen to be selected and a war surely on the horizon. Not that their battle with the Eyriens ever truly ended.

Eunji will apologize to her cousin later. Offer her the consolation prize of a pretty contract when Eunji is selected to be just that queen.
