Origin:
Gift or curse - a mark of favor from Mother Night or Her brand for the hubris of the Blood. Once, they might have known. Now, the only truth is this: the Nissi cannot hide. Native to Raej, Nissi can be found across most territories, using illusions to stay hidden.

The Nissi believe they are descended from Ashurz Bri Lub Vigdis, First Horned Daughter and progenitor of their people, and Mor Trygve, her shadow and, in some stories, her dark lover. In their history, it was Vigdis who stepped up to stand beside the hornless Blood and help build Raej into a place of peace and unity while Trygve worked to undermine her. She is seen as a symbol of strength, perseverance, justice and love. Mor Trygve, or Mor Bri Durub Trygve, is Vigdis' opposite: vicious, feral, a trickster and a thief. They are often depicted as thematic opposites locked in battle, but always in complementary colors.

Appearance:
No different physically from other Blood or even Landen, Nissi come in all shapes. Native to Raej, with her quiet forests and sprawling prairies, they are as Raejian as the hornless farmhand next door. Black haired, red haired, brunette, blonde - they follow the same geographic patterns as everyone else. They just also happen to have horns on their brows where their Blood cousins do not.

Grown as they age, the horn of a Nissi is a telling thing. It indicates health, lineage, and for some, caste and social status. The horns of families native to Raej's foothills are typically darker brown, black, or grey, and have heavy striation or ridging and spiraling. Families from the forested areas of Raej have horns more akin to deer antlers, with little to no striation or spiraling, and are typically brown, beige, light grey or white. Prairie families see a return of heavy striation and moderate spiraling while also being dark brown, beige and light grey. Although there are still large groups of Nissi inhabiting their ancestral homes, there is frequent travel between villages and cities, and much intermingling of bloodlines.

Shifted, Nissi look like neither horse nor deer, but some middling creature. Narrow, and fleet of foot, they are roughly the same height as ponies, with long tails that end in flowing tufts of hair to match their manes and feathering. They have dainty cloven hooves and long, pointed ears. In the forest, fog, and tall grasses of Raej they are ethereal sights, long horns making them all the more striking.

Behavior:
On two legs the biggest difference is their most obvious, the horn at the center of their foreheads dominating the scene. Although Nissi who travel often wear illusions to disguise their horns, there's no way to negate the fact that it's there. Rarely do they venture into buildings with low doors or ceilings, most preferring travel by open wagon or in their second form. But traveling by hoof presents its own perils.

Beyond avoidance of low ceilings and narrow doorways, Nissi on two feet are like their neighbors. They shop, farm, hunt, darn socks, spin wool. They're teachers and healers and gardeners. They are perhaps a touch more social, more community oriented, and most families of Nissi are comfortable interacting with their Landen and hornless associates, often working to include them in their celebrations or festivities.

Four legged, the Nissi might be seen as shyer, if only for the fact that they are normally encountered in the woods and know that they are easy targets for hunters. Despite their prey animal appearance, they are not defenseless. Besides their horn, their cloven hooves are sharp, and all Nissi sport both upper and lower fangs in addition to their equine grinding teeth. They are omnivores in both shapes, and will hunt rodents, snakes, and small ground birds if given the chance.

Long lived, but not the longest, Nissi observe their Birthrights between eleven and thirteen, and their Offerings between thirty and forty-five. They don't achieve the ability to shift until after their Birthright, although even Nissi without a second skin retain their horns, though the appendage is often shorter than that of their shifting cousins. The shift is something typically taught by family, though there are several small, daycare like schools within the cities that cater to the teaching of those who's parents might be unable or unavailable to train a child themselves. Orphan Nissi are taught there as well. Nissi Virgin Nights are conducted in much the same way as a typical Blood Virgin Night, and the customs vary by place.

Names and Naming Traditions:
Nissi names are Raejian names, and Raejian names are Nissi names. They are so intertwined that there is no difference. Nissi who live outside of Raej follow the naming conventions of the territory.
