The girl from across the street brought the box. Picked up at the post office along with her own family’s mail. Carried up Nor’s stairs in the same cabinet that delivered a quick bit if dinner. Nor handed the package off to Loic, a quizzical look at it before she balanced the baking dish long enough to pass a few marks to the girl before she left. A shy look cast over Nor’s shoulder at Loic.

Giggling the girl jogged down the steps, braid bouncing against her back.

”Well. I think her beau has some competition.” Nor grinned at him, eyes sweeping him from toes to curls. Some competition. ”I’m going to put this in the oven.” She swung the dish toward the entrance way and then followed it. ”You can open that if you want, Loic,” Nor called over her shoulder. The oven rattled as she yanked it open, fire lit with some careful craft.

Not quite an hour, she’d said. At least Nor thought so, the girl had been too busy ogling Loic to make full sense. Holding back her giggles just a little bit better than her eyeballs. It made Nor grin, and just a small part of her flush.

”I don’t know what it could be,” she said, still half in the kitchen. ”I haven’t ordered anything.” Maybe something from her mother, who sent packages on occasion. Nor stuck her head out of the kitchen, hands working at a towel, she leaned against the wall just looking at him.  She could see what all the giggling was about. Tossing the towel on the counter behind her, Nor finally joined him in the living room.

”Well? What did we get?” She leaned in, fingers folding down a flap on the box. She caught it then, the scent. Red. Each Jewel as familiar as her own. She could smell the depth. Male. Prince. The pieces all fell into place. Jewel and face swimming to the fore of her mind. ”Oh I remember him. But what is this.” Hand caressing the soft down of the toy. Nor laughed, eyes bright. A caribou! ”Have you ever seen such a thing!” She laughed.

Probes wiggling along its edges Loic took the package with raised brows. Curious about what was inside. Attention turning back up to the ladies just in time to blush back at the strange face Nor’s little cleaning witch made. At him.

Box shifted under his arm he stood in all his awkward glory. Fingers worrying the hairs on the back of his neck. Lips wetted while they both listened to the jingle of quick steps on the stairs.

”What? Oh. No.” Eyebrows making for his hairline and mouth hanging open in a chuckle he shook his head. Visibly caught halfway between horror and amusement. ”He can sleep easy on that.” He had exactly the woman he wanted. And even if he hadn’t the girl was terribly young.

He lifted the box back into both hands. Ready to give it up. Ready to see what was inside. Something about it’s scent prickled along his psyche. Nor was, rightly, more concerned with dinner. ”You sure?” Weight switching from one foot to the other he cast a furtive glance between the box and its intended recipient. Half the pleasure in getting a package was the opening. Maybe he should wait.

But he really wanted to know why it made his hair feel like it was standing on end.

As Nor started knocking around her little kitchen he gave the box a shake. Holding it up to his ear so he could hear. There was no sound! No hint at all about what could be inside. Lips pursing he drummed them over the lid. Oh what did it hurt really? Nor had said it was alright. Making it up his mind Loic sat on the sofa with the box lodged between his knees.

”Maybe it’s from one of your friends. You said you left Reric in a hurry, did you leave anything behind?” Something told him that whatever the package held didn’t belong to Nor. And he was right. The flaps on the lid parted and the scent of dark jewels rose up to slam into his psyche.

Turning up to Nor he tried to grin. Half his mouth working up the spirit for it. Who was this Red Jeweled Prince sending his girlfriend presents? He wished he could chuck it right out the window before she got a look at the thing. Stupid fake eyes smiling up at him from the shadows of its container. She was going to love it.

As she crossed the room to see for herself Loic shrugged. ”A toy.” Was the prince one of the people she went to Reric with every year? Loic gnashed his molars on the inside of his cheek. Nor’s hand hovered near his, both moved down to clutch at the cardboard. Letting her get a good look inside. He was relieved she didn’t start fawning right away. It seemed like she had to dig up the memory of the gift giver.

”Him who?” He asked, trying not to sound as put off as he felt. Red wearing gift sending princes! Nor laughed at the sound almost shattered his soul. ”Never. It’s almost as cute as a real calf.” That was right gift sender! Loic had real caribou! Remember Nor, remember. ”Looks like I’ve got some competition too.”

”I don’t think I did?” Nor wasn’t sure. She lost things in her cabinet so often she never fretted about what was missing until she needed it. And then it was a mad search through house and psyche trying to find whatever it was. She really needed to organize the rest of her life like she did her work room.

But it was just so much work!

Eyebrows crinkling at the look Loic gave her, Nor wrinkled her nose and grinned at him. His face was just so expressive. The only problem was that sometimes she didn’t know what it was trying to tell her. Like now. ”A toy?” Nor pulled the flap down, and Loic tilted the box so they could both look inside. A toy indeed. She folded down into the sofa with him.

”Ummm.... bear something.” Oh what had been his name? Polite, handsome, with so much hair! Nor could recall his face perfectly, and his back. Broad enough for the tattoo she’d filled it up with. Mother Night his name! Nor pet the toy and chased it farther from her mind. ”Almost! At least this one will fit in my yard.” Nor teased, kissing Loic’s cheek as if the gift had been from him.

She pulled the stuffed caribou out, and felt around at the bottom of the box for a card. For a moment it was only her nails scratching at the bottom before she found it. But Nor didn’t pick it up, eyes swinging to Loic, wide with shock. ”No you don’t.” She still felt guilty for having gone without word, leaving him to worry. It frightened her in an unpleasant way to think this might add to that.

”Byrbrother! That was it. I did a tattoo for him, is all. I’ve the sketch in my notebook. I’ll show you later.” Nor pulled out the envelope and set it aside. Pulled the box from his hands and tossed it to the floor. With his lap empty, Nor took up half of it, then all of it, sliding across his thighs so she could smooth his hair and cheeks on either side. ”No dick sketches or anything,” she teased, kissing him, so he could be sure.

But the dark scent in her living room wouldn’t let her rest fully in his lap. It was like having a watcher there. As if the prince looked through the toy’s eyes.

”It’s probably just a thank you gift, is all.” Nor picked up the envelope again and broke the seal. The paper was fancy, with the hint something else along the edges that made Nor shiver. Like a psychic thumbprint left behind by another set of hands touching the paper. She smoothed it across Loic’s chest and red. Cheeks warming with the praise and then slowly growing pale with the insinuation behind the words. ”Oh.” She hiccuped.

Loic liked most of the new feelings Nor sparked in his life. They were mostly good feelings. This time was different. He wouldn’t go so far as to say bad. Not after tasting the sharp disappointment of thinking she was letting him down easy. But still. It wasn’t a nice feeling to see her fingers on the gift she had received.

It wasn’t fair for him to be… jealous? Insecure? He didn’t know what the hard knot in his chest was, just that it was there. And that No deserved to be happy about her present. So he tried to bit down the waves of anxiety crashing in his heart. ”Bear? Weird name.” He shot before he could stop himself. A small grin of apology working in the corners of his mouth.

Some people called him the caribou guy, or worse- caribou boy. So he probably shouldn’t have been judging. Really, what sort of name was bear? ”Oh,” Like a stopper being tugged from a drain Nor’s kiss made him turn rosy and forget the weird things he was trying not to feel. Jealous. He was pretty sure it was jealousy. ”probably be gentler on your flower pots too.”

Why did it have to be such a good gift? He wouldn’t have thought to look for a toy caribou. In fact he couldn't think of a single thing he thought would make a nice gift, other than food he’d ask someone else to make. A toy would have been the farthest thing from his mind. This bearman clearly knew, or realized, more about Nor than he did. Even if she said he had no reason to worry. ”Good. I’m not very scrappy, but I’d have tried.” He joked, squeezing her knee around the box in his lap.

”Must have been a great piece. Do you get a lot of present after doing tattoos?” He’d never given her any! Not really. Tea cakes his mother sent, or a few extra marks slipped in with the fee. His chest almost clogged back up with sordid emotions. But then there was Nor. Weight shifting over his legs until she was square in his lap. Calming hands battling his curls and stroking his face. Snorting into her kiss he hummed.

He hoped there’d never be another real life addition to her dick book.

All too soon she pulled away. Leaning over the card that had come with her stuffed caribou. With Nor in his lap it was a bit easier to admit it was cute. Plush antlers reminding him of bucks in velvet. Hands on her knee and hip he relaxed into the sofa. Letting her spread the note out over his chest. Eyes a bit wider as he caught the subtle scent. He didn’t know what it was, but it buzzed across his skin. Feminine and darker than the blatantly male Red that permeated the toy and the inside of the box. Eyes on Nor he tried to keep still while she read. His own face changing to mirror hers. Cheerful as she smiled, then frowning as the color left her cheeks. ”What? What’s wrong?”

Shifting to hold her closer he tried to peer down at the letter. Maybe this Byrbrother really was competition. Whether Nor liked it or not.

”Oh.” Nor echoed him quietly, eyes warm as she glanced up at him. He was jealous, she thought. The idea warmed her. She was sympathetic to the feeling, and she didn’t want Loic to be jealous. But a part of her kind of liked it. A subtle sort of possession. Because they had agreed to have no one else between them. Loic was all hers and she was all his.

”Probably,” she grinned. Loic had warned her! And Rudy had very kindly proven him true. Scratching against her fence until it sagged, and eating everything, including the roots out of her flower pot. Which was still empty. Nor didn’t know what or how to plant anything else in it, and had yet to ask someone else from town to do it for her.

”Loic, please. There is no need for any of that.” Nor imagined he might have been scrappier than he thought himself. He had a strong body and plenty of stamina. His Jewels would have been useless against a Red, but she didn’t think his body would quit quite so easily. Her hand covered the one on her knee. He really was the sweetest thing. Hand stroking his as it slid up, her fingers laying down the length of his wrist.

”Sometimes. Usually its small things, like a tip. Or maybe a dinner.” Nor shrugged. She never expected but always appreciated the ways people expressed their appreciation to her. ”I’ve gotten a few art pieces and sketchbooks too. Its always nice, but never necessary.” She worked her way into his lap to show him a bit of appreciation. Making sure his little bit of jealousy, if that’s what it was, didn’t turn into anything darker.

Nor was set on Loic like she’d never been before. Smiling into the kiss as he tried not to laugh in her mouth. That happy sound starting up in him again. It was like he vocalized the humming he set off in her body. Not nearly long enough. But it was hard with dark Jeweled weight draping her living room. Maybe she could get the girl to give the caribou a good cleaning. Nor really wanted to keep it, but she didn’t want to bring another man’s scent into her room. That place was for Loic alone.

So she ended the kiss with some regret, and opened the letter to read it. Loic’s hands settling at her hip and her knee. Warm and comforting. Reminding her of all the reasons Stavangar was home. Even if he was the newest reason to the list. Or at least the new turn to their relationship was. She’d always treasured their friendship, which hadn’t vanished beneath the sex, thank the Darkness.

The letter worried her though.

”Hugo Byrbrother.” Nor licked her lips. ”He said he was on vacation, but apparently he was vacationing in his own city. He’s the queen’s escort. The First Escort.” Her finger curled, tip tracing the edge of the vellum, stirring the scent that had puzzled her before. A queen’s scent, lingering because the prince had written the letter but she had read, and approved it. Nor had never had one before, not like this, but she knew what it was.

”Lady Ironeyes was impressed with the tattoo too.” She looked up at Loic, sinking deeper into his lap. Bodies flush enough for sex, but Nor only felt a confused jumble of emotions. Still, it helped to he closer to him. He made her feel safe, even if she didn’t need to be scared. ”It’s an invitation, without being an invitation.” They were trying to poach her. Reric. Their queen, Lady Ironeyes, wore the Grey, if Nor remembered right. She’d never met her, of course.

Had never expected to meet any of her court either! Mother Night. She was flattered beyond comprehension.

Her list of gifts and gratuities for tattoos made Loic’s ears turn red. She dismissed them as excessive but he thought she deserved every bit. ”I think it’s great. Your tattoos are amazing. I should have been taking you out for dinner years ago. Guess we’ll have to count mine and see how many I owe you.” Teeth peeking out he gave her another gentle squeeze. He had been too shy to even say her name the first six months let alone ask her to go anywhere with him.

Even now he felt like his luck was going to run out any moment. He would enjoy every second until it did though. How could he not when she gave hi that look? And kissed him like that! Setting all the nerve endings in his body, and lungs, to buzzing pleasantly. They parted so she could spread the page over his chest. The red in his ears spread to his cheeks. She knew just how to make him feel ten feet tall.

The moment wasn’t destined for sweetness though. Her face fell and the nervous energy she exuded made Loic lean in. Face sinking in concern as he hung on every word. ”Oh,” Queen’s Escort was good, right? That was a very high profile client… and he would probably be too busy with his queen to worry about Loic’s woman! Win win. Except her face didn’t say winner. It said worried.

”Ironeyes and Byrbrother. That’s not in the least intimidating.” He tried to joke. Lips wetted and hands pulling on her hips to bring her even closer. Waiting for her to explain what was really going on. Nor was always smiling. Anything that stripped it from her face was surely a bad thing. ”Invitation.” He echoed.

They wanted her to move to Reric! ”Like… for a visit? Does the queen want a tattoo? I could go with you.” He knew that wasn’t what was being implied, but a guy could hope. ”I mean. It’s… an honor. You should probably give it some thought.” If they wanted her they would probably pay her really well to resettle. Far away. In another city. Where Loic was not. And could never permanently go. The ranch had been in his family for generations. He loved it only slightly more than he loved Nor. Who enjoyed Reric, where she already had friends.

He kneaded her hip bones. Gnawing his bottom lip thoughtfully. Wishing it would come loose and fill up the hollow lump in his stomach.
