@Bismark

Mihail Briarwood might have irritated him — just the same as every other uptight aristo who considered themselves better than Tobias even as they sought his help — but a job was still a job. The kid had certainly been right. It was only business. It might’ve been nicer if he’d removed the stick from his ass, but Tobias couldn’t get everything he wanted. This was what he did, and he loved it. There was something about tracking people down that excited him and made his blood run hot in his veins.

He liked being a predator.

He had all the information he needed, and after a coffee and pastry run at the Star, he’d set out to find his target. He found the man’s house easily enough, and though he didn’t expect to find the Warlord Prince there, he knew it would be easier to track him from there. He let himself in, arching a brow when he saw the blood on the floor. Well, well…

As Mihail had guessed, the man had taken to the winds, but that wasn’t a deterrent to a tracker like Tobias. He followed the traces of Dustan’s presence, relentlessly seeking him out. It took him a little longer than he’d expected, but in the end, he stood outside of the house the guy was holed up in.

He could practically smell the fear on the air, and he considered for a moment. He still didn’t know what Dustan had done, but he’d be damned if he didn’t find out before he sent for Mihail. He’d have plenty of time. This particular neighborhood wasn’t exactly a savory one, and no one would intervene even if they heard something untoward. It was a good place, really, and it might’ve hidden him from someone like Mihail — someone who wouldn’t have expected the Warlord Prince to hide in squalor.

But that was the beauty of it. Aristos were so fucking blind, and they were ignorant, too. The Warlord Prince had had a good idea, but he hadn’t counted on someone like Tobias tracking him down. He circled the house from beneath a sight shield, noting the windows and the back door. There was somewhere for him to run, but Tobias didn’t intend to give him the chance.

He could tell the doors were locked with the green, and he’d have to get through it quickly. He went to the back door, carefully placing his own locking spells over the other man’s. There. That would keep him inside while he shattered the one on the front door and got in.

He crossed back to the front door, knocking politely. He listened, but he didn’t hear anything from inside. He knew the Warlord Prince was inside, but it didn’t surprise him to find that he’d ignore the door. That was fine. It wouldn’t take him long to break through the lock and let himself in. With a blast from his green, he broke the physical and craft locks, and before the man inside could react, he was in the living room. He heard a few crashing sounds from the next room over and grinned, savage and excited all at once, then went for him.

It was a kid Mihail’s age, one who looked gaunt and sickly — and who radiated terror like cologne. Before he could make a break for it, Tobias snatched him into a holding spell, pressing him against the wall. ”It’s nice to meet you, Dustan Sands,” he said conversationally.

”Get out!” the Warlord Prince said, panting as he struggled to break free of Tobias’s craft. ”Who the fuck are you?”

Tobias rolled his eyes. ”You’re just going to wear yourself out,” he pointed out. ”But you can keep doing that if you want. It doesn’t matter to me, but it might matter to you when my client gets here.”

At the mention of a client, Dustan started struggling in earnest, fighting the holding spells physically and with craft alike.

”So I guess you know who wants you and why,” Tobias said thoughtfully. ”Want to share?”

Dustan didn’t answer.

Tobias rolled his eyes, and he stood there silently, crossing his arms against his chest. He watched the Warlord Prince fight into exhaustion. He probably should’ve called for Mihail now that he had this man in his custody, but he was too curious to simply let this go.

”What did you do?” he prodded again. ”You really pissed some people off.”

To his surprise, there were tears in the Warlord Prince’s eyes. ”I didn’t mean to do it,” he burst out, shaking his head. ”Please, just let me go. I didn’t mean to.”

”Didn’t mean to what?”

”I was in rut,” Dustan said desperately, pleadingly. ”I’m not responsible for what I do in rut. Okay? So just let me fucking go.”

Well then. This was getting more interesting. In rut, blood on the floor… he was starting to put the pieces together. Someone had been attacked, which meant he’d probably stolen away some woman Mihail cared for and fucked her senseless.

”I didn’t mean to do it. I didn’t!”

”Tell me what you didn’t mean to do,” he said, lacing his words with compulsion craft.

The kid fought, but he was just a kid. Tobias had been playing with the big boys for years now, and someone like this was simple enough to restrain.

”I didn’t mean to break her,” Dustan said, his eyes going wide with horror. ”Darkness, please. Please let me go!”

Tobias’s eyes narrowed at that. Break her. He’d broken a witch while he was in rut, and he thought that was an excuse? He thought he could get away with that? ”In rut or not, if you broke someone…” He shook his head slowly. ”Wow, no wonder he’s pissed.” He was already in it this far… ”Tell me who you broke.”

The Warlord Prince’s eyes went completely wide, and he fought that even harder, shaking his head quickly. But that fight didn’t mean anything. Tobias reveled in this sort of thing. This was what he did, what he loved, but he wasn’t cheerful anymore. It was one thing for him to have broken jewels, but it was another for some careless kid to break a witch because he lacked self control.

”Lir—” Dustan choked on the word, fighting it as hard as he could, but it wasn’t enough. ”Lirielle. I’m so sorry. Please, I’m so sorry. I was in rut.”

Lirielle. Tobias recognized the name of the district Queen, and a chill raced down his spine. No fucking wonder the Master of the Guard had been so keen on catching this guy and punishing him.

”You broke a fucking Queen, and you think you can just… blame the rut?” he asked in disbelief. ”You stupid fucking kid.”

Tears trailed down Dustan’s face. ”I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t mean to!”

Tobias hadn’t meant to advance on him, hadn’t meant to lash out with his power, but when the red faded from his vision, he realized the Warlord Prince’s green jewel was broken. He didn’t fucking care. Maybe Mihail had wanted him in one piece, but he wasn’t going to apologize for breaking someone who had broken a Queen and thought he could flee from the consequences.

While the man howled, reeling in shock and horror and who knew what else, Tobias cast out a thread toward Mihail. *I have what you’re looking for.* He quickly gave the location then turned his attention back to Dustan.

”We have a little bit of time before my client gets here,” he said grimly. ”And you’re very, very lucky he wants you in one piece.” He looked at the remnants of that green jewel on the floor and amended, ”As much in one piece as you’re gonna get.”

For someone who had been so confident that it was a done deal, it took a long fucking time for Tobias Marasfield to contact him. So long, in fact, that by the time he did, Mihail almost missed it, too busy, too distracted with everything else going on at court. There was a lot going on, with Lirielle still not ready to return to her duties, there was more to manage, and Mihail tried his best to take some of the strain off of the overworked steward. Their triangle was already crippled with the first escort laid up with the healers -- though Aria promised him he’d be on his feet soon enough. Physically.

He’d dropped everything though. He hadn’t given anyone an explanation as to why he had to leave but he had to leave. No one but Nicai had challenged him, and he’d simply snapped at her to mind her business and to try and forsee when things would begin to calm down.

Meanwhile his pulse was racing, his blood feeling hot, burning like alcohol as he caught the nearest and best wind he could to get as close to the location Tobias had given him. It still took him the greater part of an hour to get there, which felt impossibly long and he was half afraid of what might have happened in that time.

*I’m here* He announced when he found the house in question, fortified on all sides with green locks, which were beyond his ken, obviously, and he didn’t want to waste the carefully hoarded power in his jewels on something as futile as trying to pick a green lock.

His heart was pounding in his chest, vicious rage tightened his skin at the prospect of seeing Dustan again. To imagine they’d once gone to the same school, they’d had the same friends, and now-- well. Now they were the furthest thing from friends he could possibly imagine.

He’d rather befriend the Marasfields.

The kid had gone from shock and horror to anger to fear then back to horror all over again in the time Tobias had been watching him. He’d begged, he’d cursed, he’d threatened — which was really pathetic with the tear stains on his cheeks, the snot dripping from his nose, and the way he couldn’t stop sniffling — and he’d tried to get Tobias to let him go at least once every ten minutes.

He didn’t much care, but it was getting annoying. The longer he stayed in the boy’s presence, the more he simmered with anger. The kid didn’t think he’d done anything wrong. He’d thought he’d just get away with what he’d done because he’d been in rut — except at the same time, he couldn’t have really believed that, because he’d run. If he’d really thought he hadn’t done anything wrong — that he was blameless — he wouldn’t have taken off like he had.

Tobias ignored him though, staying silent. If he engaged, he might end up snapping, and he’d already done that once. He’d broken the kid’s offering out of sheer anger, and there was no way he could guarantee he wouldn’t do worse if he paid attention to those threats and pleas.

”Finally,” he muttered when Mihail finally contacted him to let him know he was there. He didn’t miss the way Dustan’s eyes widened with panic all over again, but he ignored it as he went to the door to dismiss the green locks long enough to let Mihail in.

”He’s all yours,” Tobias said, still smoldering with anger. He didn’t bother to say anything about the broken jewel.

When the locks disappeared, it became obvious that something had already happened in the house. The air was thick with the tension of it. Mihail couldn’t say for certain, but it felt off. Perhaps it was his own rage and nerves about that rage that gave him the cagey feeling, but one look at Tobias Marasfield told him that it likely wasn’t.

Something was eating the guy, and he looked vastly different now than he had the other day when they’d first met. This was the man whose reputation had preceded him.

“What happened?” He asked Tobias, casting a suspicious look first at the prince and then at Dustan, who was in the other room, struggling against bonds that Mihail couldn’t see or sense. What he could sense though -- or what hit him like a brick with how thick it was in the air -- was the edge of insanity that clung to Dustan now.

Not unlike how it flitted around Lirielle from time to time still.

“Mihail, I didn’t know, I swear I didn’t mean to.” The man began, but Mihail tuned it out swiftly. He didn’t want to hear it, there wasn’t an apology in the world that could make up for this. Not now, not after all of this. His gaze dropped to the dull colour of Dustan’s green, the cracks and shards of it bleak in the dim room.

“What did you do?” He asked, a little sharper, because he could sense the summer sky of the warlord prince -- who continued to babble -- but the deeper strength of the green was-- His gaze snapped to Tobias, his brow furrowing in a scowl.

Maybe the more prominent question was why. Mihail hadn’t thought he needed to specify that he’d wanted Dustan sane as well as breathing and conscious.

It wasn’t often that he utterly lost control — but then, it wasn’t often that a job was anything personal. He’d come into this arrogant and cocksure, but as soon as he’d found out what the kid had done… No, now he boiled with rage, the fact that this Warlord Prince had thought there was any justification in the entire world for what he’d done eating away at him.

He didn’t think there was anything that could’ve been said to stem his rage — and he didn’t think there was a single thing Dustan could say to cool Mihail down either.

Good.

He wanted to take care of this himself, to exact revenge upon this guy, but now… Now he believed it when Mihail said he could handle it. He’d been skeptical, and it hadn’t seemed fun that way — but none of this seemed fun anymore. This was deadly serious, like someone had fucked with his family serious, and he was thirsty for blood.

Tobias shrugged, but it didn’t take the edge off his anger. Maybe he shouldn’t have pushed to find out what the kid had done, but that was over and done with. ”Got tired of the sound of his voice,” he said flatly, his eyes dark and cold. Got tired of the pathetic excuses and threats, more like.

He sneered at the kid when he started to beg Mihail, and he was pleased to know it would be as unsuccessful as begging him. He may not have meant to lash out at him, but he didn’t regret it even a bit. He wasn’t going to regret it either, even though it put his professionalism into question. Still, it wasn’t like he wasn’t known for breaking jewels when things came down to it…

”Sorry,” he said, though he didn’t mean it.

He narrowed his eyes at Tobias, not liking the non-answer he got. It was bullshit, and given the circumstances, he didn’t care for it. Something had happened here.

“Please Mihail, he’s insane,” Dustan babbled, as if he still hadn’t clued into the fact that Mihail had been the one to set all of this in action. That he’d paid a member of the Marasfield syndicate a substantial sum for this. That this was exactly where he’d wanted Dustan.

Well… almost exactly.

“So you broke him.” Mihail concluded, clearly unimpressed. “That wasn’t the deal. And not your choice to make at that.” He grouched irritably. What the fuck gave him the right?
He wasn’t much better than Dustan. Even though Dustan deserved it, even though he deserved much worse than that, it had fucking nothing to do with Tobias and it was none of his fucking business.

“Mihail, please, I didn’t mean to, it wasn’t my fault--” Mihail wasn’t sure how many times that phrase had already been repeated and he slammed a sound shield up around the Warlord Prince -- because that was how normal people dealt with the annoying sound of someone’s voice.
“If you didn’t fucking mean to and it couldn’t be helped why the fuck are you running from me? Why do I have to have you found in this shithole?” He snapped at Dustan, letting his temper out for a moment before he ground his teeth and put a lid back on it -- he didn’t want to drag this out. He didn’t want to engage the man, he didn’t want to hear the multitude of excuses and reasons and bullshit.

Well, part of him wanted to drag this out. To make him talk and realize that he’d erred, to make him question his own right to exist -- like Lirielle questioned hers. However, not with Tobias there, looming. Already having seen too much and knowing too much. He’d promised Lirielle no one would have to know and that included Tobias Marasfield.

So now, he wanted this to be over, to be done with it, and with the Green gone, there really wasn’t much stopping him from just killing the man -- who now silently continued to thrash in his bonds.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out how this was going to end, and clearly Dustan could see if too, or he wouldn’t be snarling and raging.

Mihail dropped the shield, only to telekinetically shut the warlord prince’ windpipe, effectively shutting him up too bar the occasional choking sound as the man tried to suck in breath after breath to no avail. With one hand needed to guide the craft properly, he called in a knife into his other. There was only a few steps between them, and Mihail crossed them quickly, sticking the dagged straight into the man’s chest, digging it between the ribs and making sure that it hit home, lodging in the man’s heart. A simple probe confirmed it, and he pulled it back out, as he stepped back, seeing the shock on Dustan’s face.

”Sorry,” Tobias said again, though he knew he didn’t sound sorry at all. He wasn’t going to make excuses for what he’d done — never mind that he’d just reacted and done it before he’d thought about it. That would make it even worse. Let the kid think it had been a plan, if he wanted to, but he wasn’t going to admit to a loss of control.

He glanced at Dustan as the sound of his voice abruptly cut off, and he hummed to himself. Was it that the pleas were getting to Mihail? He didn’t know just how spooked the guy would be. This probably wasn’t something he’d ever done before — and it was probably nothing he’d do again. Because people didn’t slip and break Queens every day… And even Tobias had limits.

He stepped back, silently watching the scene before him. He didn’t let Dustan loose from his hold, and he wouldn’t unless Mihail asked him to. He might’ve been broken, but that didn’t mean he didn’t present a threat. He was still dangerous, especially as cornered as he was and as hysterical as he was, wavering between threats and pleas in equal measures.

He arched a brow when he realized Mihail was choking off the words, and he silently approved. He didn’t much care what the people he hunted down said, so he never felt the need to cut them off like that — but he could admire the action anyway… just as he could appreciate the cold-blooded murder. It wouldn’t have been what he’d done. He’d have more than made the Warlord Prince pay. But this was what the kid had wanted, and that was what he’d gotten.

He said nothing at first, simply letting his hold on Dustan drop when those eyes started to dim. It was only when the body had slumped to the floor that he spoke. ”I’ll get this taken care of,” he said, as nonchalantly as if he were talking about taking out the trash.

He didn’t feel better. Not really. He watched as Dustan gasped for breath a few more times before the loss of blood sent him into unconsciousness, effectively ending his suffering while the blood began to drip down onto the ground. It took a minute before the body slumped and sagged further down, and Mihail finally looked away, back at Tobias.

Mihail didn’t care if Tobias actually took care of it or would just leave the body to rot. It wasn’t like it would be the first body found in the shithole of a neighborhood. And it wasn’t like anyone would care that a warlord prince was found dead here. He imagined these things just happened.

“You shouldn’t have fucking done that. It was stupid and reckless.” He said sharply. He wouldn’t tell Lirielle about any of this. He wouldn’t offer her details, he didn’t want to offer her details. All she needed to know was that it was taken care of, like he’d promised. If she asked he’d lie and say he had made sure it was quick and he didn’t suffer. He wouldn’t even mention Tobias’ name, or what he’d done.

It might’ve been a lot of things, but it hadn’t been stupid or reckless. That much, Tobias knew, but he was sure he couldn’t convince Mihail of that even if he tried — and he wasn’t in the mood to try. It had been completely necessary, even if he hadn’t really intended to do it and it hadn’t been part of the plan. He wasn’t going to regret it, not then and not ever.

He really didn’t care what the kid thought, but if he thought that was all that was coming to a Warlord Prince who’d tried to excuse away what he’d done in rut, he had another thing coming. The law might’ve protected trash like that, but that didn’t mean people like him were going to tolerate it.

Maybe it was a little bit hypocritical of him, but at least he acknowledged that there was blood on his hands. Most of the time, it had been deserved, and even when it hadn’t, he didn’t much give a fuck. He certainly wouldn’t give a fuck now.

”You’re welcome,” Tobias said with a smirk. ”Pay up, then crawl back to your court, kiddo.” He hadn’t forgotten how Mihail had treated him, like he was lesser because of what he was. In this place, the kid was nothing.

Anything else. Literally anything else he would’ve gladly seen through the fingers as a necessary evil in finding and detaining Dustan. Marasfield could’ve gone apeshit on him, beaten him to a pulp, taken off an arm and beaten him with it, and he would’ve accepted it as a necessary evil, but breaking his jewels...

Mihail shook his head when the man -- unbelievably -- showed absolutely zero regret or remorse. In fact, he seemed to think that somehow Mihail should’ve been grateful for the act. The prince was as bad, if not worse, as Dustan.

He was ready to let it go, to just accept that it had been a mistake to hire Tobias for the job, considering his reputation. Darkness knew he was ready to put all of this behind him and move on with life, to figure out how to help Lirielle recover, and get her bearings again, when the man continued to patronize him.

“Don’t fucking dismiss me.” Mihail snapped. “Maybe I want to paint the walls with his blood, or take home a trophy, or burn the whole bloody house down to the ground.” He added, his temper still high.

“Definitely don’t pretend like I should be grateful for what you did. You’re as bad as he was.” He added -- not even necessarily so mad at Tobias, really, but mostly mad that he didn’t feel better after dispatching Dustan.
The fact that Tobias was treating him like a child was just insult to injury.

Tobias arched a brow as Mihail snapped at him, but he didn’t much care. The kid was an arrogant little bastard, someone who thought he knew a lot but didn’t know shit. If he’d grown up in the circles Tobias had, maybe, but not an aristo upbringing.

”I’m not dismissing you,” he said mildly. ”But whatever you decide needs to happen soon.” He wasn’t going to stay there all day.

He let out a low laugh as he was accused of being just as bad as the Warlord Prince had been. He knew better. ”Hey, you knew my reputation when you hired me. You were the one who was so disappointed I wasn’t what you were expecting.” He smirked. ”Your hands aren’t clean either, Mihail. You don’t get to pretend to be better than me. Clean death or not, you still killed a man when he was bound and helpless after hunting him down like a dog.”

“Yeah, I’m sure you meant the other definition of crawling back to my court…” Mihail muttered irritably. Perhaps it was a good thing Tobias was so good at bullshitting. If this was his how he really was, he’d never get work beyond the shit he did for his criminal enterprises.

“You think I fucking care?" He interrupted Tobias before he could finish outlining what exactly he'd done and what a terrible person he was for it now. "I always intended to get my hands dirty, that’s not the point.” He snapped. He’d only mentioned about a dozen times that he was ready and prepared for this -- that included getting his hands dirty! Not that Tobias had believed him for even a second when he’d said that, clearly. Nevermind the fact that he’d intended to do it alone, without the help of anyone, much less this guy’s.

“The point is that I needed him found. Not broken.” He snapped. “I think I would’ve mentioned if I wanted him broken. Yet you took it upon yourself, and for what? Lost your temper when he talked too much? Or did you just willfully decide to torture the guy?”

Neither was a particularly good colour as far as Mihail was concerned. One made him as bad at Dustan -- who had insisted he’d just lost control and it was beyond his abilities to stop it -- the other was worse, as it would have been a calculated move, despite Mihail being very clear that he wanted to handle the doling out of revenge himself.

Now Tobias had gone and complicated everything, and Mihail had to process it and figure out how to handle it.

”You never know,” Tobias said. Court types. He’d never been fond of them, and working with them never made him like them more. If anything, it made him less tolerant of them. ”I wouldn’t know what being at court’s like.” And he didn’t fucking want to know.

He was surprised when Mihail interrupted him, but maybe he shouldn’t have been. The kid had insisted repeatedly that he’d known what he was getting himself into, but Tobias hadn’t bought it. Sure, the murder had been pretty easy, and Mihail hadn’t thrown up after, but he wasn’t sure how much experience this Master of the Guard had.

He didn’t understand why it was such a big deal. He’d broken the guy, but it wasn’t like he’d survived much longer. He wasn’t going to tell Mihail that he knew what had happened. That was his business and his business alone.

”Didn’t want him to present too much of a threat to you,” Tobias lied sweetly. ”You wouldn’t listen to my advice, so I made sure you wouldn’t get hurt before I got paid.”

“So it was a calculated choice.” Mihail concluded out of the non-answer. The non-answer strung together with bullshit at that. He was so full of shit, and Mihail couldn’t quite believe just how full.

“Find him and detain him. That was your fucking job,” He reminded Tobias. Maybe he should’ve written it down, if the guy was even fucking literate at all.
“Not giving me advice, not breaking the green, not protecting me.” He added acerbically.

It stung a little more than he would’ve liked when it became obvious that Tobias hadn’t taken him serious in the slightest. That all he saw was some weak willed, naive kiddo who was in over his head and in dire need of protection from an asshole like Dustan.
Not once had the prince actually believed that Mihail knew what he was doing. For the most part anyway. Until thugs like Tobias Marasfield complicated matters.

“A dead warlord prince is one thing, no one would bat an eye -- especially not here.” He said, gesturing around. “But the broken green, that will raise some eyebrows.” He added with another gesture, this one at Dustan’s slumped over form. Eyebrows that wouldn’t have been raised at all if Tobias had just fucking waited outside for him.

“This can’t lead fucking back to me.” He added. Even though it more than likely would now. It didn’t take a fucking genius to find out who Dustan was, that he’d gone into rut days earlier, and then it were only a few small steps to figure out who had seen him last, and then….

People couldn’t find out about Lirielle’s purple dusk being shattered. He’d promised her.

Tobias shrugged unapologetically. It hadn’t been, but he wasn’t going to say that. He’d rather further his reputation if this got out than ruin it. Lack of control wasn’t acceptable. Protecting a client? That was far more in line with what he did. He didn’t think Mihail would go slandering him, but if he did, he wouldn’t have any luck getting anyone to care. And if he tried, they might just find out what the warlord prince had done, and no one wanted that to happen.

There was no sense in arguing with Mihail. No matter what he said, it wouldn’t be good enough. He was sure the guy thought he was on par with Dustan, and maybe he was even right. But even Tobias Marasfield drew the line somewhere, and this was something worth drawing the line over. He was glad he’d broken the bastard. He’d do it all over again, given the chance — and he’d probably break his birthright, too, just for good measure.

”It’s not going to raise any eyebrows,” he said calmly. ”It’s in my best interest and yours for this to go away. You wanna go running your mouth, go for it. Witchlight is loosely based upon the Black Jewels Series by Anne Bishop though it has been adapted and expanded by our members. All lore, characters, and writing belongs to the members. Site graphics & custom codes were created by the staff. A special thanks to Wolf & Katarina for all their help with the planning of Witchlight and the writing of the base lore.
